Meara Fisherman Sweater Crochet Pattern
Cycling through the striking contrast of rugged stone walls and vibrant green fields, it’s easy to spot the thatched roof homes nestled in amongst the cool, vast beauty of the Aran islands… A treeless kaleidoscope of slopes and crags.
Dotted with lattice-work and traveling cables, the Meara Fisherman Sweater is an easy throw on in the colder months – perfect for the seashore or fishing off the pier. Modified drop shoulders create a pullover roomy enough for layering, while bracelet-length ribbed sleeves keep the look simple and understated… The kind of perfectly flattering, perfectly useful sweater that never makes it back into your drawer.
Crisp cables climb from bottom to top, showcasing the thoughtful details and day-in-and-day-out cozy feel and comfortable ease of this snuggly turtleneck. Worked in pieces and then seamed together, this is a wonderfully uncomplicated pattern that will challenge beginners and keep experienced crocheters interested… The perfect balance!
Soft as a cloud against the skin but durable enough to weather any storm, this oversized pullover is the kind of sweater for which you ignore all the others in your closet, and the ideal companion for weekend adventures.
This oh-so-soft sweater is worked up using just one of Lion Brand’s classic, squishy yarns, Wool-Ease! Soft and warm with beautiful drape, I love the way the definition of this wool and acrylic blend creates beautifully shaped details and cables within this garment.
I’d consider this an intermediate level crochet pattern, but an advanced beginner may be able to tackle this one as I’ve also included a ton of how-to photos to help make the learning process all the more enjoyable. To get started right away, check out the free pattern below. As always you can purchase a printable PDF without ads here, or you can purchase the full yarn kit from Lion Brand here.
12 WEEKS OF CHRISTMAS
As sweater-weather rolls around thanks to autumn and it’s crisp and blustery afternoons, it’s impossible not to pull out some squishy yarn and work up a few seasonal knits and cozy crochet-wear! If you haven’t heard by now, Lion Brand is hosting their annual 12 Weeks of Christmas campaign again, and I’m so incredibly excited (and fortunate) to be able to participate this year with my Meara Fisherman Sweater!
This year, they’ve even got one step further by breaking down the 12 designs within the campaign into four groups, depending on their time commitment – helping all of us makers make sure we have enough time to complete our projects by the holiday season! With less than 100 days till Christmas, why no give the gift of handmade this year (or just treat yourself to a new pattern), as I’ve linked all the patterns below as well as include a sneak peek below of all these snuggly designs!
There are so many unique and cozy designs in the lineup, thanks to all the hard work and creativity from a bunch of lovely designers. As one of the twelve designers featured, I seriously can’t encourage you enough to hop on over and browse the collection yourself!

Hi Olivia, all I’m getting is a 404, page not found when I go to http://www.hopefulhoney.com/2018/08/fishermen-sweater-crochet-pattern.html
Olivia Kent says
Hi Mary, that link is incorrect – the month is wrong, which is sending you to a 404 page 🙂 Here’s the correct link; http://www.hopefulhoney.com/2018/09/fishermen-sweater-crochet-pattern.html
Mary says
Nope, that link just brings me back to this page every time.
DOROTHY MCDOWELL, have you been able to access it?
I’ve given up, moving on to something else as the yarn is just sitting there..
Lippy says
Just keep scrolling, just keep scrolling…..and don’t click the link

Hello so dumb question, if I wanted to size up to say a 4x, I would just increase the base chain by 8 so 114? Making it wider wouldn’t affect the design right? This is the only free pattern I can find for a classic cable knit sweater and I want to make one for my father but he’s a pretty large guy.
Samantha Garrison says
This looks so snuggly! I get cold easily, so this chic sweater is a win-win for me 😍👏

Good morning Olivia, I have got to be your biggest fan. I am so happy to see you post again and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your creation. If you don’t post for a while I look at your blog and pray all is well with you. Is your sister the model? I’m not that good ,yet, at crocheting but am going to give your creation a try. Pray all is well with you and yours and have a Blessed week.

Hi Olivia, its a beautiful sweater. I am planning to do it this week, but I cant figured out if I should do a xs-s or a m-l. Normally, I’m more a s-m. I was wondering on your picture was size are you wearing? Thanks 🙂
Sophie says
*what size are you

Love this ! You’re so talented!

What a gorgeous sweater! It’s a little more complicated than anything I’ve made so far, I will definitely save this pattern for when I get more experienced. Thanks so much for sharing!
Carolyn Cassetty says
This is an absolutely gorgeous pattern, thank you so much. However, I’m allergic to wool so I was wondering if there is another non-wool equivalent yarn I could use. Thank you for your help!
Amanda says
There is a site called yarnsub.com that I find very helpful when I want to switch out yarns. According to that site, you should be able to use a 100% acrylic yarn, like Red Heart or Caron. The biggest difference is that the acrylic fabric will look different since it isn’t made from wool, but the gauge is almost exact, so it shouldn’t alter the size too much. Hope this helps! 🙂
Seth says
Ah, your patterns are always so gorgeous! I ordered the kit and am furiously working on it. Hopefully, it will be done before Christmas, so I can give it to my mom on time.

This sweater is so beautiful! I’m really struggling with the reverse cable stitch. If there’s anyway you could show a few pictures or do a quick video (or point me to a video–I’ve looked and can’t find anything), I would be so grateful.
Anushka says
Hi Julie. I had an issue too but I found this video and it was really helpful.
J says
I feel dumb asking but I think I’m missing something. At the very beginning if I start off with the appropriate amount of chains with a 6mm hook and aran yarn, the row comes out way more than double (really long!) the width of any top I could wear! The sweater would be huge. What am I missing…?
Arline says
In regard s to the cuff the only thing I could come up with is maybe it doesn’t count the sl st as a stitch.. but it takes up a space in the cuff
Maya Sunley says
Having trouble with the cuffs, I’ve starting on the sleeve (I’m doing medium size) but the sleeve starts with 33 stitches, and the cuff only has 22 rows? And it doesn’t say anywhere in the cuff to decrease or skip any stitches 😔 and it’s the same with the neckline and the hemline, they both have about half the amount of rows as the part being ‘cuffed’ has starting stitches but I don’t understand where to decrease! Thank you ( :

I’m having a similar issue, I think I’m following as the pattern says but it ends up looking different than the pictures
Becca says
Same issue here, and it’s “skirting” out, redid it with a smaller hook size but it wasn’t much better
C.K, says
Has anyone ever figured this problem out? I worked so hard on this sweater and am so upset that I’m not sure how to complete the cuff. I know there has to be decreasing somewhere, but the pattern doesn’t mention decreases anywhere. I’ve read through it several times. Please help!
AMB says
Same here. I purchased kit and emailed the creator of pattern awaiting response.
LGFG says
Just finished the sweater and now doing the cuff starting with the sleeve. I made a small, so 27 stitches around with 17 rows of ribbing. I tried doing 2 rows and then skipping a stitch in the “bottom row” of sleeve. After finishing the sleeve, the ribbing came out slanted (like the comment below). Has anyone figured the sequence for the ribbing? Afraid to tackle the neckline.
Karissa says
Hey hey! I made this sweater a few months ago, so I’m a little fuzzy on the details, but I remember having these exact problems. For the neckline, I ended up having to redo it several times and just “feel it out”, by skipping stitches/decreasing every so often. I did the same with the bottom hem and sleeves, though the bottom hem has a good amount of “skirting” :/ So essentially I would just guess at where to decrease depending on how loose or tight you want your ribbing. I hope this can be helpful!
LGFG says
Thanks Karissa. I did play with the spacing just to make it work. And it took a while and quite a number of tries. No matter what I did with the ribbing though, it is always coming out on a slant. Would you know why this is the case? My tension is pretty consistent but all the ribbing still comes out slanted. Ugh.
LGFG says
Hi. I finally figured out an alternative since I had so issues with the cuffs. Although I love the pattern and how detailed it was written until the cuffs, I did this substitution and it worked out well. Sharing this as an option. This sub works for the sleeves, hemline and neckline.——- Row 1: Start the row like the pattern states. After finishing hdc to bottom end, sl st in next stitch on bottom row of sweater/sleeve, then sl st in next 2 sts. (3 total) Turn work. Row 2: Skip next 3 sl st, 1 camel hdc in next sts going up. On the last st, hdc (through both loops so cuff comes out straight and clean looking). Ch 1. Turn. Camel hdc to bottom. Sl st in next 3 sts on sweater/sleeve. Turn work. Row 3: Repeat row 2 around to end. Seam together from bottom to top. This worked for me eliminating the guess work where to decrease and it does not come out slanted! It looks great and stretches nicely without the cuffs “skirting” out. I did find that it did “skirt” out when I did 2 sl st on the bottom row, but changing this to 3 sl st fixed it. So happy with how it turned out this way 😀
LGFG says
Forgot to add that I dropped down a size in hook. I used a size H (5mm) hook.

Oh my Goodness! This is amazing.
I literally just found your site recently and today when I wondered “Hmmm, I wonder if there are any good fisherman sweaters that I can crochet instead of knit” the FIRST thing to come up was from you!
It’s absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

I just came across your pattern, I can’t believe I didn’t find it sooner, but it is gorgeous! I’ve been looking for some good patterns to make several sweaters for this Fall and Winter, and I can’t wait to try this one for me! Thank you!

Very excited to start making this sweater… I live in Canada and no stores carry lionbrand wool ease so michael’s suggested loops and threads impeccable I hope it turns out, im not great at finding a substitute lol, also would lionbrand heartland be a good substitute?
Emma Franchett says
This sweater is beautiful! My husband has been begging me to make him a fisherman’s sweater for some time now, but crochet patterns for men are all so incredibly dated! And I don’t know how to knit. He does, however, love this sweater. He wears a men’s M/L. Could this pattern be adapted to fit him? It doesn’t look to be like too much of a ladies cut in the body. I’d only be worried about the sleeve length. I’d appreciate any thoughts!
Adriana Wissmann says
I really want to make this sweater for my sister, but I have never worked with wool before. I have enough Patons wool, which is %100 wool compared to Wool-Ease which I think is only %25, should I worry about shrinkage? I was planning on making the M/L size and expecting some shrinkage to fit her small frame, but maybe %100 wool isn’t the way to go with this. I also was thinking maybe just telling her to always wash it in cold water to avoid shrinkage when possible… Any tips would be helpful!
B says
hi! is there a way for me to make this longer so it’s more like a knee-length dress? what adjustments do i have to make to do so?
Anushka says
Hello. This is an awesome pattern. I’m finding it a bit confusing with the flsc rows – if I do the flsc in the tops of the fptr stitches, i end up with some weird pockets at the back behind the sets of 6. If I do the flsc in the tops of the previous flsc stitches in the sets of 6, I have no space to properly do the next fptr stitches.
Please help.
C.K. says
If done correctly you will get the “pockets” on the wrong side.
Mary H says
I am in row 61 size L but The center figure looks like the picture, if I continue till row 69 I will have another motive and is going to be very long.
Emily Palumbo says
For some reason my ribbing is finishing on a slant. Why would that be happening. I’m skipping every other foundation stitch sine you’ve indicated in the patter that the number ribbing rows is approximately on of the finished stitch’s when the front/back are sewed together.
Beth Curtis says
What stitch do you use to “seam” the pieces and ribbing together? (A whip stitch possibly?)
Karissa says
For my sweater, I used a whip stitch for the areas with less tension, but for higher tension areas such as the shoulders, I used a mattress stitch! It’s a little more complex to pick up at first, but it’s virtually invisible and takes up hardly any space! (this info was found on google:)) The mattress stitch would be a great choice for all parts of the sweater as well, it’s just a little more time consuming.
Rose says
I made something to this similar about 15 years ago and have looked for a pattern that I can recreate for myself. Thank you for the detailed instructions for a beautiful, crocheted fisherman sweater!
Charissa says
I’m up to row 12 on the first piece and no matter how much I count, everything after the chart section is crooked. What am I doing wrong?? I feel like I’ll need to redo everything I’ve done so far because I don’t see any alternatives to this problem.
Beth says
Can you send a picture of what you’ve done do far?
Charissa says
I ended up just redoing it. I must’ve miscounted on a row because everything is turning out straight now.
Beth says
Glad it’s working for you. It’s a beautiful sweater! (I’m wearing mine today.) 😊

I’m having the same issue as “anonymous “ from October 6, 2023. Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong. Not even halfway around neck line and I’m already in the 25th row- says I’m only supposed to have 37 total.
Thank you for your time
LGFG says
Hi. I had the same problem. I had to substitute my own stitches for ALL the cuffs. Came out great! Refer to my Jan 27, 2024 posts. I wrote it all out there. I’ve made 3 sweaters using my sub and looks just like the pic. No guess work 🙂
Anonymous says
Hey! I’m not sure if you’ll be seeing this but I had a question on the neckline ribbing. The medium size is listed to have 33 rows of ribbing around the neckline, but after around 20, I hadn’t even made it halfway. Should I be skipping every other row when I slip stitch, or is there something else I should know? Thanks!!
Heather says
Interested to know as well, using the J hook and skipping 6 rows just doesnt look/sound right
