The Olivine Ruana – Crochet Pattern
The hurrying rustle of crisp leaves being blown along a cobbled street; The unmistakable sounds of autumn are in the air. As we nod farewell to warmer weather, we happily welcome cozy sweaters, caramel apples and pumpkin picking with open arms!
As you skip between neatly raked piles of golden leaves, envelope yourself in the snuggly warmth of The Olivine Ruana, an over-sized layering piece that comfortably drapes over any ensemble. From the dramatic style to the detailed forest-like design, this poncho will conjure up memories of wilderness getaways to a cozy log cabin nestled in amongst the trees.
Tassels add a finishing touch of modern elegance to this already trendy look, making it a versatile piece to pair with boots and jeans, or draped as a blanket around your shoulders as you snuggle around the bonfire on a crisp autumn evening…
With towering pines in mind and the idea of creating a wrap not only full of movement but also soft and cosy enough to snuggle in, I knew I wanted to use a lofty wool blend, knowing very well that the warmth of this ruana would quickly make it a staple in any autumn wardrobe!
I absolutely loved the lush yet dense quality of my Spiced Pear Beanie, so I chose to work with the same Lion’s Pride Woolspun yarn by Lion Brand… Chunky, warm and still somehow manages to stay soft and flowy when crocheted up – The perfect fit for this oversized design!
I’ve labeled this pattern as easy because of the intricate stitch design, but I think an ambitious beginner may be able to tackle this one as I’ve also included a ton of how-to photos to help make the learning process all the more easy and enjoyable. ASSEMBLY:
Block each finished panel to correct height/width.
Join the two panels together by seaming 20”/51cm [30”/76cm] along the edge of “Row 40 [49]”, working from the bottom till you reach the shoulder line.
TASSELS (6):
Cut 12 16”/41cm strands of yarn and set aside. Cut 120 [150] strands of yarn 14”/36cm in length –Divide into 6 groups of 20 [25] strands each.
Tie each group of yarn at the middle point with one of the 16”/41cm strands. Fold each group in half, then tie another 16”/41cm strand around each folded bundle about 1.25”/3cm from the top – Continue wrapping the tails of the strand around the group 3 – 4 times.
Tie the tops of the tassels onto the 6 corners of the ruana, making sure to weave the loose ends inside the middle of each tassel. Trim tassels to 5”/13cm[6”/15cm] in length.
Hope you all enjoy this pattern for a cosy, autumnal ruana.

The Woolspun yarn is 127 yds per skein. If I need 1700 yards that would be 14 skeins. Can you please clarify how many of those are for the green color opposite to the cream color? I want to make sure I order correctly.
Linda says
I did a swatch for the gauge on a 10mm hook. Totally hated the fact t the stitches were not as close as I would like them. I decided I would use a smaller size and started with an 8mm hook, it’s coming together as I like my work to look. Is this ok to go from a 10 to an 8 any advice would be welcomed. Thanks
Marie says

My name is Janet and I have been crocheting since I was 7. I am now almost 67 and still working the crochet hook. I am looking forward to this Ruana. I am disabled and on a very limited income, so any one with left over yarn, you can send it to me. It will all be put to good use. Look me up on facebook or pinterest.
Renee Russell says
As another poster noted, how many skeins of the accent color do you need if you are making the adult size?
Sandra says
Thanks for the pattern. There is a typo on the left panel. You have chosen 48 not 98. Will try real soon. Thanks
Lynne says
I noticed that too and the typo still exists over a yr later! Lovely pattern nonetheless.
Sharon Klundt says
Cannot get the Olivine Ruana pattern! It is beautiful!!
Mary R says
To start the left panel, shouldn’t the beginning chain be 98 and not 48?
Priscilla Jackson says
Would this work up okay with a 4 weight worsted? I live in the South and I think a chunky weight might be a little too heavy for my taste.
AJ Selko says
How many skiens did you use to make the whole Ruana
RoyG says
