The Block Stitch is the perfect stitch for every single crocheter to learn, as it is a fairly easy stitch to learn and creates a colourful and unique design!
I actually learned how to crochet the Block Stitch a long time ago, and loved it so much that I went ahead and designed my Warm & Toasty Winter Cowl.

If you’d like to learn how to crochet the “Block Stitch“, this helpful video will guide you through all the steps as you continue on your ever-growing crochet journey!

What are some other crochet stitches or techniques you’d like to learn?
I’m always open to new ideas and inspiration when it comes to

I would like to make an Afghan using this stitch. How many chains across would I need to make it a twin size topper for my bed? I can make it as long as I wish but need help to compute chains for the width. If I then want to make it still wider, is there a set number I would use so as not to have enough or too many stitches to finish the row perfectly. Thank you for your excellent tutorial and pleasant speaking voice.

In the video where she did the row 1 of pink, row 2 of green, and then row 3 of pink (and so on), you would need to do row 1 of pink, row 2 of white, row 3 of green, row 4 of white, row 5 of pink, row 6 of white, etc..

I'm 77 years old. I've been crocheting for many years but have always used a written pattern someone else wrote. I would love to make something I figured out on my own before I die. When you say 3+1 do I chain a multiple of chain 4's or do I chain a multiple of chain 3 and add chain 1 at the end of chain 3's. This is so confusing to me. Please help. I would really appreciate your help.

Did you get your answer? It would be multiples of 3 until you get your desired length/width then 1 more chain at the end (which acts as the turning chain).

This was very helpful once I realised that when you said single crochet you really meant double crochet, and the double crochets are actually trebles. I thought that being Australian you would use UK terminology and not the incorrect American one. Perhaps you could mention that at the beginning of each video? Otherwise showing the actual stitching is very clear, thank you.

That was very offensive. I’m American and the terms are like languages, they’re not “wrong” just different. The young lady who makes these tutorials for free is just using the terms she’s comfortable with. Just like if I went to Germany, I would still speak English because it’s what I know and what I am comfortable with. It is NOT wrong. Preference isn’t wrong. This is art! Crocheting is beautiful and much live goes into the effort, I’m appalled that you have the audacity to tell this this kind hearted lady she’s using “wrong” terms because they’re American! I’ll pray for you.

Sarah, I totally agree with you. It isn’t a matter of right or wrong when crocheting. It all depends on where the artist is from because the same term can mean different things in each country.

Although I love the background music, I find it a little distracting. I find myself stopping and listening and then get lost. You might want to turn it lower in your next video or just have it on at the beginning and the end. 🙂

All this whining is so annoying!! The author provided the stitch pattern via a video. PERIOD. She took the time away from her own life to do the video FREE of charge. It’s unfortunate if you cannot work from the video or mail it off to someone without a computer. She is under no obligation to provide anything further. The tutorial is to show how the block stitch is done. It is not for her to figure out how many stitches or how many skeins of yarn someone will need to make whatever project you decide to use the stitch on. Be thankful and grateful she provided the stitch pattern at all. The cliche you give someone an inch and they want a mile always holds true. For gosh sakes search the internet and see if you can find a blanket or whatever project you wish which uses the block stitch. You may have to purchase it. Oh well!

Agreed! This tutorial is one of the clearest I have seen with the steps explained slowly and using a yarn that clearly showed the stitches. You explained exactly how to do each stitch. And as a beginner my first sample came out fairly even and far better than I had expected. With a fairly thin yarn a starting chain of 19 gave about 4.5-5 ish inches.

Love your easy to follow directions. The BLOCK STITCH is ideal for boarders on some baby blankets or Afghans.
An idea; change your bamboo hook to a metal hook and the yarn will not “grab” and stick to the hook.

Before she started her project. Would you also be able to do an extremely basic video. Showing the basics ex. Chain stitch, how to make chains. How to count stitches in rows. How to change colors. Just extremely back to basic stuff. My granddaughter is trying to teach herself. Your method are extremely well taught. I would like her to learn from someone with patience and understanding of the craft. You do an excellent job. I’m going to suggest your site to her.
