Cookie Monster Inspired Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

Every time I see a jar filled to brim with cookies I can’t help but hear the Cookie Monster’s voice in my head saying his iconic “Me want cookie! Om nom nom nom” catchphrase.
What are some things you can’t help but associate with your childhood?





What You’ll Need

6.00mm Crochet Hook
5.00mm Crochet Hook 

4.00mm Crochet Hook
  400yds DK (8ply) Yarn – Stylecraft Special DK

Tapestry Needle
Toy Stuffing


Finished Size
3 – 6 Months Old
{Head Circumference 16 inches, 40cm. Hat Height 6.5 inches, 16.5cm}



Rnd 1- Taking your 6.00mm crochet hook and blue yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 8 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet. You should have 8 half double crochets now.
Rnd 2- Chain 1, then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the first stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet. You should have 16 half double crochets now. 
Rnd 3- Chain 1, then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the first stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet. You should have 24 half double crochets now.
Rnd 4- Chain 1, then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the first stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet. You should have 32 half double crochets now.
Rnd 5- Chain 1, then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the first stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 3 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet. You should have 40 half double crochets now.
Rnd 6- Chain 1,
then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the first stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet. You should have 53 half double crochets now.
Rnd 7 – 14- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the first stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the first half double crochet.
Row 15- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the first stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet only into the next 35 stitches. {Note: This is starting to create the back of the hat as well as the ear-flaps.}
Row 16- Turn your work, then chain Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the first stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 35 stitches. Do NOT fasten off, as you will be crocheting the left ear-flap in the same place.

Left Ear-Flap
Rnd 1- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 6 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Rnd 2- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 4 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Rnd 3- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Rnd 4- Chain 1. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochet Decreases.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.

Right Ear-Flap
Start of by attaching your blue yarn to the last stitch of Row 16.
Right across from where the left ear-flap is.
Rnd 1- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 6 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Rnd 2- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 4 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Rnd 3- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease.
Rnd 4- Chain 1. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochet Decreases.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.

Border
Taking your 6.00mm crochet hook and blue yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then attach your yarn to the back of the hat, right in the middle.
Then Single Crochet all along the edge of your hat. Slip Stitch into the first single crochet.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.

Smile
Row 1- Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and black yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 9 Chains. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the third chain from your hook. Then crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch, all across. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the last stitch. You should have 9 half double crochets now.
Row 2- Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into ever stitch, all across. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the last stitch. You should have 11 half double crochets now.
Row 3 – 5- Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into ever stitch, all across. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into the last stitch.
Then, taking your tapestry needle, sew your smile onto your hat, below the eyes. 
Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Cookie

Rnd 1- Taking your 4.00mm crochet hook and beige yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 9 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 10 half double crochets now.

Rnd 2- Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 20 half double crochets now. 
Rnd 3- Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 30 half double crochets now.
Now, taking your tapestry needle and chocolate brown yarn, stitch some detailing onto the cookie {Note: This gives the appearance of a chocolate chip cookie.}
Then sew the cookie onto your hat, and partially over the smile.

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Eyes
Rnd 1- Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and white yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 7 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 8 half double crochets now.
Rnd 2- Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 16 half double crochets now.
Rnd 3- Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 3 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 20 half double crochets now.
Rnd 4 – 6- Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. 
Rnd 7- Chain 2. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet Decrease into the following stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 3 stitches. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. Fasten off, weave in loose ends.

Pupil

Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and black yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 9 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 10 half double crochets now. 
Repeat eye pattern once more to make a pair.
Once
you’ve completed both eyes, take some toy stuffing, and fill both of the eyes with the stuffing.
Then, taking your tapestry
needle and white yarn, stitch some detailing onto both the eyes
pupil’s, in the upper left-hand corner. Then sew the pupils onto the eyes, and the eyes onto the hat.
Fasten off, and weave in ends.
Braided Tassels
Taking your periwinkle blue, black and white yarn, cut 12 strands of yarn (4 of each colour), each 30 inches
long. Then create a simple knot into the bottom of the left ear-flap. Make
a loose braid as short or long as you like, (Mine was 8 inches) then
tie a knot at the end, and cut of any excess yarn.
Repeat for the right ear-flap.

    Since you are from Australia and I am from US, I need to know are your stitches British or American? As least I think thats how what they are called, I just know the US stitches are not the same. :0)
