Chunky Cabled Cat Hat Crochet Pattern

April 28, 2015 Category: Crochet / Hats + Headbands / Patterns

From the young age of six, I’ve unfortunately not only been allergic to dogs, but also cats… And let’s just say, a goldfish is not a great substitute pet!
So despite the fact that I love to flaunt a top knot bun and crochet non-stop,  I guess this chunky cabled cat hat is the closest I’ll ever get to becoming a cat lady -sigh-.
Do you have any pets?.. I’m currently considering a guinea pig!

Materials

12.00mm Crochet Hook
250g Super Bulky Yarn (14ply) – Passioknit Scandy Armytage
Tapestry/Yarn Needle

Scissors

Size
Fits 13 Years & Up
Head Circumference: 22″
Gauge
5 rows x 6 stitches in hdc = 4 inches

Taking your 12.00mm crochet hook and super bulky yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 34 Chains. Slip Stitch into the first chain.
Rnd 1- Chain 1. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the same stitch. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the next 33 stitches. Do not slip stitch into the first hdc of this round. You should have 34 stitches now.
Rnd 2- Start crocheting in the first stitch from the previous round. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the next 34 stitches. Do not slip stitch into the first hdc of this round.
Rnd 3– Start crocheting in the first stitch from the previous round. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the next 11 stitches. Crochet 1 Back Post Double Crochet in the next 2 stitches. Crochet 1 Braid Stitch into the next 8 stitches. {Note: I have an easy video tutorial below on how to crochet the cable braid stitch.} Crochet 1 Back Post Double Crochet in the next 2 stitches. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the next 11 stitches. Do not slip stitch into the first hdc of this round.

Rnd 4– Start crocheting in the first stitch from the previous round. Crochet 1
Half Double Crochet in the next 11 stitches. Crochet 1 Back Post Double Crochet in the next 2 stitches. Crochet 1 Front Post Double Crochet in the next 8 stitches. Crochet 1 Back Post Double Crochet in the next 2 stitches.
Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the next 11 stitches. Do not slip
stitch into the first hdc of this round.
Rnd 5– Repeat round 4.
Rnd 6– Repeat round 3.
Rnd 7-8-Repeat round 4.
Rnd 9-Repeat round 3.
Rnd 10– Start crocheting in the first stitch from the previous round. Crochet 1
Half Double Crochet in the next 11 stitches. Crochet 1 Back Post Double Crochet in the next 2 stitches. Crochet 1 Front Post Double Crochet in the next 8 stitches. Crochet 1 Back Post Double Crochet in the next 2 stitches.
Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet in the next 10 stitches. Crochet 1 Single Crochet in the next stitch. Slip Stitch into the first stitch of this round.

When you’ve completed all the rounds, Slip Stitch across the top of the hat, till it’s closed {Note: The top of the hat is round 10}

Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
I would also suggest blocking your hat to make sure the cable is straight, and right in the center of the hat.

Hope you all enjoyed this cat inspired pattern!

If you did crochet this, please post a photo of your creation onto my Facebook Page.
I’d love to see it!
Have a lovely day crocheting,

I wish I could make it! Sadly I don't have a big enough crochet hook. 🙁

Thank you for the pattern but I'm lost!! After the 10th round, do we fasten off then slip stitch from side to side?

Love this hat! I started making it for my son's girlfriend & finished through Row 10 which leaves me at the middle of the back. After that it says to slip stitch until hat is closed. I don't understand how the ears are created from there…please help!

You sew across the corners to get the ears to lay flat.

For the chunky cabled cat hat pattern, could you please tell me what the level of difficulty this would be to crochet if I was experienced at crochet?
