Winter Tempest Blanket – Crochet Pattern

Surging waves send the sharp, salty smell of the ocean swirling up into the air. Grey clouds gather overhead, a ominous reminder that a storm is fast approaching, bringing with it cool gusts of wind and an excuse to head indoors and snuggle up by the fireplace.

Envelope yourself in the warmth and serenity of the Winter Tempest Blanket, as it gently transports you to a quaint little cottage by the seaside. The tranquil world of oceans and rippling waves brings a simple sophistication to this elegant blanket. Perfect as a couch throw, the eclectic, uneven stripes make this an artistic home accessory for any room! From the billowing tassels to the detailed ocean-like design, this blanket will conjure up memories of stormy seas as you snuggle underneath it’s fluffy cosiness with a hot chocolate to warm your icy fingers.

The Winter Tempest Blanket is fluffy and extra snuggly and provides the perfect amount of warmth as you slip out of the cosy toastiness of your bed and tiptoe along the icy wooden floors to sit and watch as the storm brews on the cold horizon… Listening to the pitter-patter of rain on the window, a perfectly calm way to start the day.

I wanted to showcase the variety of neutrals that always paint themselves across a stormy sky, and Lion Brand’s New Basic 175 yarn was a superb fit! This yarn has so many wonderful cool colorways, so I chose an eclectic pattern to let them all shine.

Because of the intricate stitch design I’d consider this an intermediate pattern, but an ambitious beginner may be able to tackle this one as I’ve also included a ton of how-to photos to help make the learning process all the more enjoyable. Ready to embark on this new crochet pattern? You can find the free pattern below, and as always you can purchase an ad-free, printable PDF version here, or grab the yarn kit from Lion Brand here.

    I’m confused about making a SC and then doing a SC into the same stitch. How exactly do you do that? Am I doing a SC increase? IE two SC into the first stitch?

    I have got to row 35 and the pattern seems to go wrong, it seems as if the sl st row needs to be on an even row otherwise the bobbles are on the wrong side. Am I doing something wrong ?

        Hi,
        I did not figure out the multiples and I’m in the middle of it now. But I am going to do an edging all around and only do 4 large tassels which I will put one in each corner. I tend to crochet tightly, but my gauge matched up so I’m using my Clover Amour hook 7.0 mm. But on the single crochet rows, including the linen stitch rows, I went up to an L hook (8.0 mm). The edges get a little wonky with the linen stitch for me, so putting an edging and nice border around it should straighten it out. Plus I will block it when done as well. The border will make it a little wider. With different stitches in so many rows, I just couldn’t figure out the multiples. ANOTHER THING, if you are using this yarn it is very hard to frog, so I didn’t want to take a chance with trying out some other numbers to make wider. Since I live in Queens, NY, I was able to buy another skein of each color at the Lion Brand store in Manhattan, and it was on sale for month of September. So I have enough for the border. Good luck if you are attempting to make larger. It is a fun pattern and one day I may do one for myself.

    Thank you for this beautiful pattern! I made it as a wedding gift, and just love how it turned out! I decided to use Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca yarn in Charcoal, Oxford Grey, Jade & Cream. Instead of adding the mini-tassels, I used Red Heart Super Bulky Fur in Polar to add the texture in the Row 30-34 section of the pattern; instead of 5 rows this became a 7 row region. I also omitted the tassels on the ends, opting instead to a 3-row border of the charcoal. I used the extra yarn instead to make 4″x4″ coasters and a coffee table basket. The instructions were GREAT! Thanks again!

    I’ve run into a problem at Row 16. The directions say Change to color D, but D is at the other side. And then Row 17 says to change back to C, but C would then also be at the wrong side. I checked it over several times, had a friend check it, and found nothing wrong. I frogged it all and redid it, and have the same problem. I can think of several ways around this — sl st across, or reverse rows 16 and 17, or ignore the color directions, but I’d rather know what the problem is. Not to mention that if I start changing things, I could run into further complications. HELP!!!

    I just finished this and it turned out beautiful! Couldn’t get the kit anymore, so had to use different yarns. Wish I could attach a picture. The only problem I had was my stitch count kept increasing. I think it’s because of the “sc in same stitch” To me that seems like you are adding a stitch each row. I’ve never seen a pattern that does that. Anyway, eventually I just quit doing that. Thanks for the pattern. It was fun. And interesting.

    Great pattern! For those of you trying to widen it, I went with a foundation double crochet chain of 140 and it worked beautifully, so I thinkthat multiples of 5 should work.

      Thank you Ashley;
      your suggestion will allow me to test size a 15 st piece and calculate how many 5st increases I need, to get the width of blanket I want. It’s such a shame that the author of the pattern didn’t see fit to help ANYONE who asked for size amendment information. Thank Heaven’s for You 🙂.

    I’m so so stuck on rows 35/36. I can’t seem to get the light grey to be on the right side after i slip stitch in the dark grey. What am I missing?

      I’m at this part too and having the same problem. I decided to end color D on row 34 and start Color B for row 35 without turning. It seems to be working for now.

    The yarn you used, which I love, is no longer available. Do you have suggestions for alternates? Thank you for your time.

    I am confused about one thin in rows 5 and 6. It says to Ch 1, the sc in SAME stitch. Does that mean to sc in the chain? Or the next stitch? Not sure what’s meant by same stitch.
