Vintage Pearl Baby Hat Crochet Pattern
Over the weekend I got the heartwarming opportunity to hold and cuddle my dear friend’s 10 day old baby girl – still pink and filling the air with that delicious “new baby” smell… Talk about cuteness overload!
It didn’t take me long to combine my love of newborns and vintage things to create this adorable hat you see below, enjoy! Also, if you’d like to create a matching vintage set for you and your bub, you can find the adult size HERE!
Materials
4.5mm (7) Crochet Hook
DK Yarn (8ply) – “Drops Muskat” (109yds/50g)
Tapestry Needle; Pearls;
Finished Size
Newborn/0 – 3 Months Old
Head Circumference: 13.5 inches (34cm)
Hat Height: 5.25 inches (13cm)
Gauge
19 stitches + 13 rows = 4″/10cm in half double crochet
Skill Level
This is an “Easy” level crochet pattern (includes “How-To” photos). You must be familiar with basic crochet stitches and techniques. Directions written so that they are easy to read and follow. All patterns are in English, and written in standard US terms.
+ PATTERN
Note: This hat is worked in the rnd, from top to bottom.
+ HAT
Ch2 using DK yarn and 4.5mm hook.
Rnd 1: 8 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not sl st in the 1st st of this rnd. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Start crocheting in the 1st st from the previous rnd. 2 hdc in the 1st st. 2 hdc in every st all around. Do not sl st in the 1st st of this rnd. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: Start crocheting in the 1st st from the previous rnd. 2 hdc in the 1st st. *1 hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st. Repeat from the * all around. Do not sl st in the 1st st of this rnd. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: Start crocheting in the 1st st from the previous rnd. 2 hdc in the 1st st. *1 hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. Repeat from the * all around. Do not sl st in the 1st st of this rnd. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: Start crocheting in the 1st st from the previous rnd. 2 hdc in the 1st st. *1 hdc in the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. Repeat from the * all around. Do not sl st in the 1st st of this rnd. (40 sts)
Rnd 6: Start crocheting in the 1st st from the previous rnd. 2 hdc in the 1st st. *1 hdc in the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st. Repeat from the * all around.Sl st in the 1st st of this rnd. (48 sts)
Rnd 7: Ch1, 1 sc in the same st. *Skip 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st. Skip 2 sts, 1 sc in the next st. Repeat from the * 6 times. Skip 2 sts, crochet 5 dc in the next st. Skip 2 sts. Sl st in the 1st sc of this rnd.
Rnd 8: Ch2, 3 dc in the same st. *Skip 2 sts, 1 sc in the next st. Skip 2 sts, 5 dc in the next st. Repeat from the * 6 times. Skip 2 sts, 1 sc in the next st. Skip 2 sts,crochet 2 dc in the 1st st of this rnd (Note: The st containing the ch2 + 3 dc). Sl st in the 1st dc of this rnd.
Rnd 9 – 14: Repeat rnds 7 – 8.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.
+ FINISHINGS
Once you’ve completed crocheting your hat, take a sewing needle and some thread and sew the pearls onto the hat. Make sure to space them out evenly. (Note: Depending on the effect your going for, you can either sew more or less pearls onto the hat)

This hat is beautiful and I would love to make it for our new granddaughter expected in March. Is the pattern written in United States crochet terms? I thought that British and United States had different terms for stitches, but I wasn't sure about this. Thank you.

Can you tell me how to adapt this pattern to a chemo cap for women. I know that it is assumed they do not have any hair and I have no idea what size to make it. A friend and I were making baby caps for a home for unwed mothers and now we want to make chemo caps for men and women.

She loved/s it so much that she wore/wears it around the house and even to bed! It’s a little too small this year, so I made a bigger one in orchid. It looks so pretty; now she has two to wear!

I used an 8 ply dk yarn and 4.5 mm hook yet my hat came out with smaller dimensions than what you have listed. My hat is 10 in circumference and 3.5 inches height….
You must crochet very tightly. Have you noticed the same problem when you’ve crocheted other items? Sometimes the tendency to “tighten up” occurs with the finer weight yarns (do/sport weight, baby, fingering, etc) but working with worsted weight turns out pretty close to the expected gauge.
Whatever the cause, the solution is to increase your hook size, one size at a time, until you achieve the proper gauge for the project. As you work with the thinner yarns more, you may find that your tension will become looser.
If you have issues with too tight of tension no matter what weight of yarn you use, you should practice just making swatches of sc or hdc, perhaps 6” or 8” square, concentrating on keeping your tension looser. You can usually find a suggested swatch gauge and hook size right on the wrapper of whatever yarn you are using (as long as it’s one of the mass-produced yarns, like Lion Brand, Bernal, etc.)
If you are always crocheting super tight, you will not only make things more difficult for yourself when it comes to working the next row, but your hands will fatigue more quickly, and you’ll increase your risk of repetitive stress injuries, such as carpal tunnel.
My hat also turned out much smaller than the pattern said it would. I am an experienced crocheter and do not usually have a problem with sizing.
This comes out really sweet. It’s been a long while since I added in beads or pearls. For those of you that are asking how these are added as you stitch. With a needle that fits through the pearls. Thread pearls onto yarn. Start hat and keep pushing pearls down until you need one. I also added the pearls at single crochet on opposite rows so they staggered. How I did it was to start single crochet but insteD of pulling loop through add pearl and then pull another loop up behind pearl. Make sure to push pearl forward. So it faces right side of work. When you do next row and are double crocheting into that stitch, push the pearl forward and make sure to work in stitch behind it. I wanted this to come out bigger and I usually go down a hook size for patterns and alot of patterns come out big. I crochet loose. This was 0 – 3 months size completed. Thanks so much for the pattern. I love it!
