Nifty Newsboy Hat Crochet Pattern

Imagine the short about Winnie the Pooh and the blustery day. Now, before we go any further, have you got that mental image in your head? Well imagine that every single time you step outside your home you encounter such a windy day. And what’s even better is the wonderful (note the sarcasm) affects it can have on naturally curly hair! In my case, this nightmare has become a daily occurrence.

Every year around July/August we get such huge gusts of wind howling around every corner, that it ends up creating quite a magical yet eery sound.
So currently I have a love-hate relationship with our brisk winter days, but I think with this Newsboy hat to keep my curls in place, I might be leaning slightly more towards love!
Do you like blustery days?

You could crochet with 3 strands of DK yarn instead of 1 strand of 14ply yarn 🙂

I made one of these today with #6, 170g bulky weight yarn I have, and a 10mm hook, and it is huge! lol. Way too big, probably by 2 to 3 inches. I'm going to try reducing the pattern a bit. I'm new to crochet, so it could be poor technique on my part too. I'm happy it looks like a hat! lol 🙂

I used a 9mm with the same yarn you used and it came out perfectly. Sometimes it's easier to use a smaller hook then reducing the pattern.

I too am a bit hung up on round 3 however this is my first attempt at a pattern & hat. I'm guessing you do 1 half double crochet in the next stitch. Then do 2 half double crochets in the stitch (3rd) after that???? Help!

This is such an awesome pattern!! Thank you so much for sharing it for free! i'm just finishing my second hat (the first one came out funky because i made mistakes at joining the seam) and i absolutely LOVE it, it's so cute, i plan on making a more for my sisters! i didn't have the right sized hook, only an 8mm, so i added an extra 2 stitches in round one and then had to do some mental gymnastics to work the brim since i then had 6 more stitches at that point than you did, but it came out perfect. Thank you again Olivia! ♥ ♥

    Hi Olivia

Im hung up on this part

"Start of by attaching your yarn to the back of the hat, right in the middle.
Round 1~ Chain 1. Crochet 1 Single Crochet into the next 17 stitches. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 20 stitches. Crochet 1 Single Crochet into every stitch till the end of the round. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 1.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends."

where exactly do I attach yarn.. bottom edge? Ive made most of the hat so far and its so adorable! Also I used a 9mm hook since I dont have a 10 and the hat fits me perfect.

If you notice, the round before this one, you began in the 14th st and crocheted into 14 stitches (2 stitches you crocheted into 2x's making 16 stitches crocheted totall.). You did not crochet the whole way around the hat. Then cut the yarn off.
In the next row you are basically going to crochet the whole way around the hat starting at the back. You begin by finding the back seam of the hat – with the right side facing you (This will be the first stitch of Row 13.). The directions have you making a chain 1 and 1 single crochet in that stitch. Then follow the directions the whole way around the hat and join with a slip stitch to the chain 1 of the current row. Does that make sense? Making the Brim this way gives it a nice edge.

Hi Olivia! I love this hat :D..and like the others said, it IS very cute on you….I made one tonight, very easily, and it fits perfectly also :D…i used two strands of worsted weight yarn together throughout the pattern with a P size hook….perfect.however, the part that confused me the most is when i got to the brim part…i understood attaching the yarn to the 14th chain and so forth (in order to start the brim), but it was the part about attaching the yarn to the back of the hat and crocheting 17 stitches, then 20 stitches and so forth etc….I'm crazy about the brim part so i want to get it right. i usually either get tripped up with instructions on making the brim or the instructions are a little off in other patterns. Please clarify. thanks so much!

OK Olivia, no need to clarify…i think i figured it out! :D…i crocheted as instructed by inserting my needle to the back of the hat and i see that this way doubles as an edging for the hat as it works its way to the second round of the brim…brilliant! thanks again for sharing your wonderful pattern! =)

I think I failed the brim on the hat? I’m not sure why it’s not clicking for me! The 20 instead of 10 on the brim have me tripped up. I love this pattern! I read all your comments and I’m still having troubles. It’s hard to tell that my hat has a brim.

Thanks for your help! And the pattern!!

These instructions are confusing as written. I am not getting my stitches to match up at all at the end of my rounds. It is a little frustrating. Are you counting the slip stitch as a stitch? When you hdc in the same stitch is it in the slip stitch space…?

Just made thus hat. It turned our super cute, but way smaller than it should be. I think I used the wrong yarn. Hmmm. I guess my daughter can wear it.

Pattern is beyond cofusing! Can’t I just do a magic circle and crochet using a seam? Slip stitching at the end of each round makes much more sense. Would also be nice if the person that made the pattern responded to people’s comments.

Hey there, thanks for sharing! Im loving this style of hat! Id like to make this on a smaller hook out of preference. I was having a hard time getting hats to fit until i found the crown chart but with this being a rounded fitted hat i’m not sure if it’ll help completely and it doesn’t hurt to ask.
If i were to use a 7mm crochet hook with yarn to match how would i go about changing the rows? Do i add extra stitches to the starting ring plus/or add extra rounds of increases until it fits around my head? I know i’ll have to wing it and probably end up redoing it a few times but i’ve plenty of patience. Tia, sarah x

When attaching the hat band, do you recommend putting anchor stitches between the ends? If so would you anchor in the middle of the band from the backside or would you anchor the top and bottom of the band. I realize the band needs to be able to stretch, but I would guess we don’t want the band to be floppy over time due to wear. Any suggestions would be great.

I love this hat. I am having trouble with the brim. So I ended the hat and hide my ends. and it says to start on chain 14. I am assuming you use a slip knot and start row one?
But it tell you to fasten your ends.
Round 2 I am not following how you crochet in the round on the brim for the 2nd row?
Why can’t you chain two and turn your work to do the 2nd row (round 2)?

can you explain a bit more about the brim? you said “attach yarn to back of hat, right in the middle” ? where precisely?
