Newborn Evil Minion Inspired Hat Crochet Pattern

Since I watched "Despicable Me 2" I've been craving another dose of minions. I know it sounds odd, but their adorable yet unrecognizable babbling makes me smile... And let's not even get started on their amazing dance skills and singing!
I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the minion movie, but the only problem is that it comes out next year! -tear- Oh well, at least I have my minion hats to keep me company!

 What You'll Need
7.00mm Crochet Hook
5.00mm Crochet Hook
65g Bulky Yarn {12ply}
10g DK Yarn {8ply}
Tapestry/Wool Needle
Scissors

Finished Size
Newborn, 0 - 3 Months Old
{Head Circumference 13.5 inches, 34cm. Hat Height 5.5 inches, 14cm}

Colours
{This is the list of colours I used.}
Ash Grey - 8ply
Lavender - 12ply
Jet Black - 12ply & 8ply
Snow White - 8ply


{Chains at the start of a round count as the first Half Double Crochet of that round}

~ Hat ~

Round 1~ Taking your 7.00mm crochet hook and lavender yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 3 Chains. Crochet 7 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 3. You should have 8 half double crochets now.
Round 2~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 16 half double crochets now. 
Round 3Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next stitch. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.  Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 24 half double crochets now.
Round 4~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 32 half double crochets now.
Round 5~ Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2.
Round 6 - 7~Change yarn colour to jet black. Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2.
Round 8 - 10~ Change yarn colour to lavender. Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2.
Round 11~ Change yarn colour to jet black. Chain 2. Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2.
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.

Then make a Pom Pom using your lavender yarn. I used a pom pom maker, but if you don't have one you can easily make one using THIS video tutorial.
Taking your tapestry/wool needle, attach the pom pom to the very top of your hat. 
Fasten off, and weave in loose ends.

~ Eye ~

Round 1~ Taking your 5.00mm crochet hook and jet black yarn, start of by making a Slip Knot, then crochet 2 Chains. Crochet 7 Half Double Crochets into the first chain you made. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 8 half double crochets now.
Round 2~ Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. Crochet 2 Half Double Crochets into every stitch all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 16 half double crochets now. 
Round 3~ Change yarn colour to snow white. Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 24 half double crochets now.
Round 4~ Change yarn colour to ash grey. Chain 2, then crochet a Half Double Crochet into the same stitch. *Crochet 1 Half Double Crochet into the next 2 stitches. Then crochet 2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch. Repeat from the * all around. Slip Stitch into the top of chain 2. You should have 32 half double crochets now.
When you've completed all the rounds, take your tapestry needle and sew your eye onto your hat, right in the middle of the black stripe on your hat.
Fasten off, and weave in ends.

  1. Gah that is so adorable!!!!! I wish I knew how to crochet so I could make this. I just couldn't figure it out after knitting with two needles - one needle for crocheting just doesn't click in my brain ha!

  2. The hat perfect! And super cute. I absolutely love their babbling and how spazzy they are, so much that I made a crochet version of Dave the minion with a cupcake hehe :)
