5 Tips To Improve Your Blog

Recently I've been getting a ton of emails all including the same question,
"Can you tell me how to make my blog better?"
I obviously feel extremely flattered and special that so many of you are coming to me for blogging advice!... Especially since I've only been blogging little over a year, and still consider myself somewhat of a newbie.
None the less, I realized that there are still a lot of things I can teach to some of my fellow bloggers. So here I am sitting, typing down my words of blogging wisdom, hoping that it'll help and inspire some of you lovely people!

~ 1 ~
Be Unique.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there are thousands and THOUSANDS of blogs out there, and sadly this fact only makes it harder for all of us to have our blogs be recognized. But despite the odds, I firmly believe that as long as you're unique and stay true to who you are, and write about things you love and know about, then your blog will start to grow and grow! Remember, when people read your blog they love getting to know Y-O-U and your story, so be sure when you write, do write as if you were talking to friend.

Find The Right Blog Design For You.

As you probably already know, people tend to be very visual, and your blog's background and header image are two of the first things they'll notice when visiting your blog for the very first time.
Because of this, your background and header both need to be inviting as well as portray what you and your blog are passionate about.
For example, if your blog is about travelling, why not use a background of vintage maps?
If you're a cook, why not choose a header with some photos or graphics of food?
Now I'm sure you're wondering where exactly you're going to find some nice backgrounds? Well I'm happy to say that there are dozens of sites full of blogging freebies, including backgrounds and header images. You just need to look.
But to help you out, here are a few of my favourite free blog background sites, enjoy!

The Background Fairy

Allie Brown's Layouts

Butterflygirlms Rambles On
{She has a list of lots of sites with free backgrounds and headers}

However, if you're willing to pay for a background and header image there are tons of websites that will be perfect for you too.
Here's a few of my favourite ones!

Don't Clutter.

This one should be pretty obvious. I've always believed that a blog is definitely one of the places where 'Less' is 'More'. As tempting as it is to make your blog stand out from the crowd, DON'T over clutter it, EVER! Try and stick to a certain colour theme and don't stray too far away from it.
Also, remember to keep your sidebar looking sleek and neat at all times. It'll help make your blog appear 10x more professional, trust me!

~ 4 ~
Create An "About Me" & "Contact" Page.

"About Me" and "Contact" pages are great for helping people make a personal connection with you, and personal connections are very important in the blogging world.
People need to feel they know you.
A contact page is also great if someone has a question for you. Not to mention that it's always SO fun reading a message from one of your readers...
It's always helped inspire and motivate me to keep blogging.
But don't forget, they took the time to write to you especially, so always try write back no matter how long it takes you to reply. It'll make them feel special, and part of a community.

Add Social Media Icons To Your Blog.

Social Media Icons are amazing! They help de-clutter your sidebar while helping to frame your blog with a set of very professional looking buttons.
Now I know words like "HTML", and "Coding" scare most people away, but I have a super easy peasy tutorial on my blog that can help you add icons to your blog in minutes!
You can find the tutorial HERE!
I hope everyone reading this who owns a blog will challenge themselves and give it a go!
You wouldn't want to be deprived of the amazing feeling you get after having improved your blog!
Surprisingly, once you know how to work with basic HTML it can be pretty fun!

I hope all of you found these tips helpful, if you have any questions, comment away!
I'm hoping to do a "Part 2" blogpost of tips to improve your blog further,
so let me know if that's something you guys would be interested in?
Have a great day blogging!

  5. Hi,

I just started a blog and your post is really helpful! Your social media icons are really lovely so I added them to my site through your tutorial, which was really helpful too.

    Thank you so much!

  6. Thanks for the tips! I pinned... I def have some work to do! :) Julia

  7. Thank you Olivia, these tips are very helpful. I appreciate your sage advice and sharing your resources.

    Take care,

  8. Hi Olivia,
I agree to declutter and be unique. Those are important. I did want to let you know though that you are not supposed to change the social media icons to match your blog. I just heard this last week and then did some research. Social media have rules and regulations for their logos and many times you need to just use what they provide. Otherwise you would be in violation. I just changed mine back this weekend. Just wanted to let you know.

  9. And can I add one more since this is about improving your blog. Always remove the captcha codes for comments unless you get ridiculous spam. Sometimes I will not even leave a comment when they ask for a code. But now I will have to deal with it again since I am commenting again. :)

  10. Great comments! Glad I found your site. Love your name.

  11. These tips are great! Thank you so much. I've used some icons for social media and I already love them! You're great!
